After the Bayonetta scandal, Silent Hill 2's translator speaks up
0

Shortly after the announcement of a remake of the second flagship opus of the Silent Hill license by Konami, the translator and voice director of the PS2 version ironically expressed his dissatisfaction on the networks. Be careful... it seems quite upbeat!

"I was just asking for a decent, dignified wage to live on. What they did was legal, but it was immoral," Hellena Taylor, the original Bayonetta license voice actress, said a few days ago. She also added that developer PlatinumGames was only willing to offer her $4,000 to reprise her role in the third installment of the series. Thus, a scandal was launched and the actress wanted to share her feelings on the networks. Taylor's videos have been viewed nearly 10 million times to date, and the actress has received an outpouring of support from gamers as well as fellow voice actors, who have long complained of being underrated. paid. Like what, making a video sometimes helps to share an uncomfortable situation.

Making a video is what Jeremy Blaustein, translator and English voice director of Silent Hill 2 on PlayStation 2, comically envisions . The latter recently posted a message of displeasure on Twitter saying that he would like to see his name appear in the credits of the remake, given that he did most of the English dialogue. At least he wished he had been made aware that a remake was on the way…

"Maybe I should make a video?"

Shortly after the announcement of the release of the remake of the mythical Silent Hill 2 by Konami, Jeremy Blaustein replied ironically to the tweet of the Japanese company. A rather accusatory post that immediately made people talk about it. The voice director would have liked to have had a little recognition from Konami for his work on the second opus on PS2.

"Cool! And they will, once again, use the SH2 English script that I wrote/translated (oh, directed too) completely by myself and I will get zero compensation for it and there will not be tens of thousands of people on Twitter outraged on my behalf. Maybe I should make a video?"

However, it is worth remembering that Konami has not yet spoken about the English dubbing of this remake of Silent Hill 2. At this time, we do not yet know if the company will reuse the voices cast and partly created by Jeremy Blaustein or not.

“I do not expect financial compensation”

In an interview for GamesRadar , the translator expresses his hard work for this second original opus released in 2001. A colossal job that required him so much energy that he would not like to see his productions reused without at least being credited.

"I translated every single word of the Silent Hill 2 game. There were no other translators. I directed the voice over work. All of it. I arranged the auditions, led them, and was one of about four to five people who made the decisions on which actors to go with. My voice in those matters was generally agreed to since none of the Japanese staff were capable of judging the actors due to their lack of English ability. I directed the dramatic performances in the motion capture sessions."

Despite everything, Blaustein declares (to GamesRadar always) not to expect financial compensation if Konami comes to reuse his work, all he really wants is recognition. So he expects to see his name in the remake's credits: "I have a firm belief that giving myself proper credit for my role is the right thing to do" ( Source ).

In any case, we will have to wait some time before knowing whether or not the Japanese company will use the translator's work. At least the voice director of Silent Hill 2 on PS2 has laid the cards on the tables!
