LoL: The worst champion may have brought a lot of money to Riot

With more than 150 champions available, League of Legends does not lack diversity in its gameplay. But competition is fierce to attract players and not all of them are popular. What's more amazing is that an unexpected champion is making a lot of money for Riot Games.

League of Legends is presented as a free-to-play and after far too many games without having spent the slightest kopeck, we can only confirm the health of our wallet, failing to have known how to preserve our mental health because fanatics from soloQ . But you have to put butter in the spinach and Riot Games does not develop its game, only for our beautiful eyes. Its business model incorporates cash flow through cosmetics. No, we are not talking here about make-up or day cream, but about champion skins, beacon skins or summoner icons.

Skins allow you to personify your character and there is a whole series of them: Project skins, K/DA skins, Championship skins, esport skins... They bring absolutely nothing to the level of character power , but they still allow you to stand out and flex during games. We imagine that the business is less profitable than Fortnite, master in the matter with its crossovers from hell (Naruto, Rick and Morty, Spiderman...). But it is nonetheless juicy since you can find a lot of skins in the store at 1350 RP (i.e. more or less 10 euros) such as Lunar Eclipse Senna , BZZZZiggs or Porcelain Lux . All tastes are in nature, but we heard a rumor that one of the "worst" champions in the game had sold the most skins... It is impossible to verify since the figures are hidden. But it would be amazing if it were true!

Where the Rumor Comes From: From the Crazy China Leaker

This rumor comes from Korean LNG Kim " Doinb " Tae-sang. This former world champion is very popular within the community. His extravagant personality, his performances on the pitch, his unique style of play, his open love affair with his wife... There are plenty of reasons to follow the former FPX midlaner. But there is also another reason to follow Doinb on his personal stream: the player is extremely talkative and extremely knowledgeable. He has a reputation for being a crazy leaker and we still don't understand why nobody told him anything. But for us, it's very practical since during the transfer window, we can often have the information in preview with him. He also announced before anyone else that China would play MSI online this year, due to coronavirus restrictions.

And while we laughed at him for his choice of world champion skin , won in 2019 at the expense of G2 Esports, he wanted to reestablish his truth, perhaps not hesitating to say a little too much.

Malphite, really number 2 of skin sellers?

League of Legends

The information is to be taken with a grain of salt, since we don't speak a damn word of Mandarin. But if we trust the subtitles, Malphite le pebble would be the 2nd best selling skin. It's really hard to believe, but now that the rumor is out, we really want to know if it's true. If Doinb ever talked "only" about esport skins, it would be a little less impressive but it would still be very surprising! Malphite is really an unpopular champion and for us he is one of the "worst" champions . Its gameplay is limited, its design is very raw and its biography does not make you want to be interested in this rock creature either. In toplane, he loses almost all his match ups, in the jungle he really isn't of much use and on the other lanes, he is often considered borderline troll... In what world could he be the 2nd best? League of Legends skin seller? There would only be one other champion ahead of him and when you look at the competition, that's hard to swallow. Champions like Lux, Ahri, Ezreal or Kai'Sa seem much more legitimate to us. In addition to being often in the metagame, they are more pleasant to play.

If we want to give some credit to Doinb and the person in charge of the subtitles, we can still find some somewhat positive signs:

  • the champion is old : Malphite was released in 2009 at the same time as champions like Nasus or Blitzcrank. He would therefore have had time to accumulate a lot of sales figures over the years.
  • the champion has a lot of skins : Malphite has 12 skins, which puts the site in the middle high of the list. Ezreal and Lux have 16 but some champions only have a very small one (Rell, Vex).
  • the champion has special skins : in addition to the FPX Malphite world champion esport skin, there is also the Dark Star Malphite Prestige edition skin
  • the champion also has a lot of chromas : Malphite Mecha has 8 chromas, Malphite Odyssey has 6, Old God Malphite has 9, and FPX Malphite has one. This diversity has boosted sales a little, we imagine...
