Last January, a new exploit was discovered in the code of Dark Souls 3, which forced FromSoftware to shut down the online servers of the game in question, as well as Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls: Remastered.
The exploit in question allowed the hacker to execute code remotely on another player's PC , which would make it possible to perform the various actions performed by viruses in general (theft of passwords and identifiers, installation of 'a bitcoin miner…), but also to trigger spam on Discord with a link to the virus in order to contaminate other machines.
Today, and as previously promised by the game's teams, the details of the famous exploit have been publicly revealed. It is noted that other FromSoftware games, including Elden Ring, could be affected by this type of vulnerability.
Elden Ring in danger?
Indeed, LukeYui , the developer of the Dark Souls anti-cheat system (blue sentinel), revealed to the VGC teams: "The implementation of Easy Anti Cheat in Elden Ring is highly flawed and can be circumvented in a trivial way in several ways. " .
However, on Elden Ring it would seem that the vulnerabilities stop at the anti-cheat system . According to LukeYui (again), the FromSoftwares teams have worked hard on coding vulnerabilities, including those that allow hackers to perform these famous exploits. "To my surprise, they fixed them all in Elden Ring, which is amazing," he said.
About Dark Souls
The servers for Dark Souls games on PC had been closed by FromSoftware until after the release of Elden Ring, that is to say until February 25 , supposedly.
Regarding this, Bandai Namco said: "We would like to thank the entire Dark Souls community and the players who contacted us directly with their concerns and offered solutions. Thanks to you, we have identified the cause of the problem and we are working on fixing it [...] Due to the time it takes to set up proper test environments, online service for Dark Souls on PC will not resume until after the release of Elden Ring. We will continue to do everything in our power to restore these services as soon as possible."
As of now, the PC servers in question are still down , and players are starting to get impatient that they haven't been able to access them for two months now. In any case, it seems that the company still has work to do on the game, to finally reopen soon (we hope), the Dark Souls game servers.
