“Griefing” is a term that often comes up in debates around the competitive side of Fortnite.
Often misused, it pejoratively denotes an attitude that consists of harming a player or team that is in a better position to win the match or competition in question.
For most of the game's analysts, this is a misleading word; it doesn't really exist since it doesn't imply breaking the rules of Fortnite.
When the last-placed player in a tournament decides to land at the first-place player's spawn in an attempt to hinder him, the term "griefing" is used, although it is a decision that cannot be blamed on a battle royale.
Clearly, griefing is certainly not the most "sporting" attitude that can be observed in Fortnite, but it is not the scourge that we're sometimes made to fear either. It's the game, that's all.
Very recently, a Reddit post generated a lot of reactions from the community. It shows a player in a bad position rushing into the storm while building.
Many commentators believe that this is a form of griefing on the part of the fugitive.
Knowing he is doomed, they run into the storm — giving their opponent as little chance as possible to recover their equipment and materials upon death.
While that player may be a bit of a sore loser in denying the winner of the duel their rewards, the evidence in this video just isn't enough for us to say for sure whether this is griefing.
Other commentators suggest that it may very well be a strategy.
Perhaps the fugitive has plenty of healing items to mitigate the storm damage. Maybe they are also trying to delay the other player receiving the spoils in order to play the ranking points system as much as possible.
The moral of the story is that you should never be too quick to yell at the "griefer", especially in a competitive mode — and especially when you don't have all the information in hand to properly judge another's strategy.
