Capcom has announced that their flagship Street Fighter V event, the Capcom Cup, has been cancelled due to rising concerns regarding the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic.

Capcom Cup 2020 cancelled due to pandemic, replaced by online event

Originally scheduled to take place in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, the 2020 Capcom Cup will now not go ahead as an offline event.

Defending champion Idom, the eighteen winners of online CPT events, plus fan favourite vote winner Olivier "Luffy" Hay, were due to take part in the tournament on February 20-21.

However, citing increasing uncertainty about the global health crisis, Capcom have now decided that it is too much of a risk.

The full statement is as follows:

The Capcom Cup was originally moved from its traditional end-of-year slot, and now it will move entirely virtual.

In their statement, Capcom said that the online event would 'highlight the best players from this season' — although, naturally, community concerns immediately turned to the long and well-documented netcode issues.

Capcom intends for its online event to take place on the same weekend as the offline one was to take place, with further details to be released soon.

Alongside the event was to be the release — or at least details of — the next update to Street Fighter V, including the ncharacter to join the roster, Dan Hibiki.

Capcom announces Capcom Cup groups

The Fighting Game World Finals don't play out like a classic double-elimination tournament, but begin with a group stage where only the best advance in the event. Capcom 2020 groups on Street Fighter V have been announced.
