Apex Legends’ cross-play beta to be released soon

Apex Legends will release its latest Collection Event, Aftermarket, on Tuesday, October 6. This major update will bring lots of new content including a brand new LTM called Flashpoint but also and above all the long-awaited cross-play beta.

Since the launch of the game, players were asking for crossplay to be implemented in the game. This allows to play with friends whatever device they're playing on.

Respawn took some time but finally deployed a beta to test the crossplay and see if it works well in game.

According to Chad Grenier, Game Director for Apex Legends, players will have full access to cross-play functionality while developers collect data data, test the feature at scale, and feedback.

How it will work

You'll be able to party up and play together across all currently supported platforms (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Origin). Cross platform play is enabled by default, unless you’ve changed it. Basically, you'll be able to add, invite, and voice chat with friends from all platforms.

However, you need to know that cross-play doesn't mean cross-progression. You won't be able to carry your save data from one platform to the next.

Regarding matchmaking, it's a bit more complicated because PC players will continue to play with only other PC players. There is a reason for this and it's quite simple:

"We want to ensure that keyboard and mouse PC players are not being matched against console players, for reasons that should be obvious."

It's understandable and it's important to know that it will be possible for console players to play with PC players but they will be put in PC matches. Obviously, controller players will benefit from an aim assist feature, M+K allowing for more precise movements.

This will be an opportunity to see how gunfights between PC and console players go.

Respawn hasn't communicated on the duration of this beta. The only thing we know is that the Aftermarket event ends on October 20.

Job listings for Apex Legends seem to confirm that a mobile version of the game is in development.
