Part of Kame Sennin's gameplay was revealed during the recent Dragon Ball FighterZ Show. Here's how he shapes up following his release yesterday.

Dragon Ball FighterZ : Master Roshi Gameplay

The first thing we notice is that Master Roshi will teach us the Kame school mantra: "Work hard! Study well! And eat and sleep plenty! That's the Turtle Hermit way!". He will also have special interactions with his former students Goku, Krillin and Yamsha.

Master Roshi was made available yesterday for owners of the Season 3 pass, and for those without the pass you'll be able to purchase him individually tomorrow.

Move Input Guide

The following uses the Numeric Annotation System to describe inputs. Check out this primer to decode moves.

For example, '44H' means 'back, back, heavy'.

j = jump, H = heavy, L = light, M = medium, S = Special

The first thing we notice about his gameplay is his 5L, which comes fast and has good range. His other normals are average, not especially good nor bad. He's got a teleport without spending energy with his 44H, 6 frames without a specific animation before, which will be kinda hard to read. His aerials are quite interesting, especially his good range j.H, and his j.6M which can cross-up very easily.

His special (S) is a Kiaï, like Adult Gohan. His 2S is a back leap, with ki blast invulnerability and which can end a combo, allowing the player to reposition to avoid being punished. The landing can be cancelled by a H or a S. His 236S is classic Kameha, but his 214S is amazing! It's an unblockable throw, with long range making this move the king of anti-air. It can be aimed directly upwards and ground-bounce on hit, which will consume knockdown smash. Master Roshi also has a command grab with his 22S, which has ambiguous start up with 5LL.

Master Roshi cannot fly, and as such he's unable to float and superdash. These are replaced with two other options: Masterful Leap and Reverse Kamehameha.

Masterful Leap is a special, projectile immune jump that can go in six directions, with different places of landing, making it hard to read and punish. Reverse Kamehameha is an aimed dash similar to GT Goku's 214S, except with a lingering hitbox trailing behind. It seems that you can use both in the same jump — starting Masterful Leap, then following up with Reverse Kameha.

These unique mechanics are interesting, but the community won't forget that the other character with unique moves, Videl, is low-tier.

Among his specials, his 214 L/M/H shines where he hulks out, with long invulnerability. His 236 L/M/H is a lariat, swapping sides. The 22L/M/H is a split kick that goes over low, making it a good option to punish any opponent's teleportation.

The former Martial Arts World Champion can use the Mafuba with 236L+M, which switch the ennemy. If it kills instead of switching, a cinematic plays. The 236S+H has 2 levels, first one being a combo which can be followed by a Kameha for another bar. It is one the Super Moves that will deal the most damage on switch among the entire cast. His 214L+M is Max Power Kamehameha, but is a lvl 3 that deals among the least damage in the game, similar to Janemba's lvl 3.

His A-Assist is a classic Kameha beam. His B-Assist is a 46-frame lockdown high stun assist, which along with Bardock's and Gotenks' B-Assist is one of the best in the game. His C-Assist is also a combo, with the best blockstun time for a C-Assist.

According to people who labbed him, Goku's master will have specific combo roads, and being able to use him well will require some time. His aerial roads are below average, but he has more options, which make it ok.
