With the situation regarding travel and hosting gatherings globally still up in the air, DreamHack have taken the decision to postpone all of their major events in 2020. The five listed above follow the cancellation of DreamHack Dallas, Summer and Montreal earlier in the year.
The affected events are:
- DreamHack Rotterdam — originally scheduled for October 16-18, 2020
- DreamHack Hyderabad — originally scheduled for October 31-November 1, 2020
- DreamHack Atlanta — originally scheduled for November 13-15, 2020
- DreamHack Winter — originally scheduled for November 27-29, 2020
- DreamHack Madrid — originally scheduled for December 11-13, 2020
All events will now take place in 2021, situation allowing, with a complete schedule to be announced later this year.
“The goal for all of us at DreamHack is to provide great experiences at our events, which thrive by bringing communities together for these shared and beloved festival weekends all around the globe,” said DreamHack Co-CEO Marcus Lindmark. “We have never had to postpone events like this before — but these are extraordinary times, and the safety of our attendees and staff has never been more important than now.”
This is certainly a blow for esports in general, given the sheer number of titles that form part of DreamHack's many festivals worldwide.
Instead, organisers are promising to deliver more online-based events, including the DreamHack Open featuring Fortnite — with $250,000 on offer monthly across the EU and NA East/West regions.
DreamHack Open Summer is also ongoing for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, with Stage 2 of the tournament - held across the Europe, North America, Oceania and Asia regions - beginning this past weekend.
Other online DreamHack tournaments include StarCraft II, a major ranking tournament in CS:GO as well as the Showdown, and the Playoffs of the new Northern League of Legends Championship (NLC) - the top-tier ERL for the UK and Nordics.
In a fresh round of esports event postponements, both Valve and DreamHack have announced that several 2020 events have been impacted by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. This includes Dota 2's The International and DreamHack Summer.
