Call of Duty: Warzone to be updated for PS5 and Xbox Series X support

In an interview with GamerGen, Infinity Ward and Raven Software have revealed that Call of Duty: Warzone will be supported on next-gen consoles once they are released.

The Narrative Director at Infinity Ward has stated that the studio will be aiming to support Warzone on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

I know that our plan is Warzone is going to be around for quite some time, so as soon as those new systems are out and available I’m sure we’ll support them.

A Glimpse Into Season 4

Details of what to expect in the next season of post-launch content were also teased during the interview.

The appearance of the Red Access Card has sparked interest of a potential in-game event taking place, potentially revealing a brand-new map for the battle royale game, or revealing what is hidden behind the bunker doors which can be found around the map.

Players have already discovered that there is a whole other part of Verdansk they haven’t seen yet. They have found clues, and that there is more than meets the eye in this city. Season 4 will unravel some of those mysteries and unlock some of them for our players. As the battle in Verdansk wages on, things will grow more desperate. There are going to be more and more fighters sent in to turn the tide and we’re very excited to get our players to see and join alongside these new great warriors as they continue to fight.

In-Game Events

Kurosaki also clarified comments made regarding in-game events in Warzone being on a similar scale to those that take place in Fortnite. He states that Modern Warfare and Fortnite are "very different" in the way that the developers are approaching in-game events.

I wouldn’t say they’re Fortnite-like events, because Fortnite is such a different type of a game than Modern Warfare. With Fortnite you know that the world is ever evolving and ever changing so much you kind of don’t want to go away from it or you might miss something. It’s the same thing with Warzone.

Warzone will be a constant

Talk surrounding the release of Call of Duty 2020, is slowly but surely ramping up and with teasers for the next instalment of the franchise usually appearing around this time of year, it has been revealed that Warzone will be the one constant as the annual releases continue.

We’re in kind of uncharted territories here. Call of Duty has been on a very regular cadence for many many years, and Warzone has made us rethink exactly how best to release new content and how to integrate it. Call of Duty is a genre in itself, there are different branches in the Call of Duty tree, but they’re all connected in some ways. Warzone will be the through line that connects all of the different various sub-franchises of Call of Duty. It’s going to be really cool to see how the different sub-franchises sort of come in and out of focus, but Warzone will be the one constant.

With Warzone expected to be Call of Duty's main battle royale game for quite some time, it is highly unlikely that a second instalment of Treyarch's Blackout will be arriving anytime soon.

It will certainly be interesting to see how Warzone continues to grow in popularity and what changes will be made to keep it feeling fresh.

A new Warzone map for Season 4?

Data miners have found teasing videos in the game files that would announce a change of the map for the next season of Warzone. More information in this article.
