Monster Hunter Rise: How to capture a monster

Capturing monsters can not only save time when it comes to hunts, but it can also be useful when you need to obtain rare material. In this new Monster Hunter Rise guide, we explain how to save the lives of large monsters by capturing them.

Capturing a monster in Monster Hunter Rise is the alternative to killing a big monster and we highly recommend you apply it as much as possible.

Items needed for capture

There are three items available for the capture: two types of trap and one type of bomb to put your prey into a deep sleep. These items can be made directly from the crafting tab. It is possible to have only one trap of each type in your bag, but also the ingredients necessary to make two other of these items, even though this should not be necessary.

  • Shock: Trap Tool + Thunderbug
  • Pitfall: Trap Tool + Net
  • Tranq Bombs: Sleep Herb + Parashroom

Beware, the herbs needed to make tranquilizers are present in the Frozen Islands area, but not in the desert area. However, as you progress in the adventure, you will unlock the purchase of bombs in the Buddies Plazza, which tends towards more accessibility and preparation shortcuts. Finally, the Kamura merchant's lottery is an excellent way to get everything you need for your captures: traps often fall into the lots, so be sure to get your draw as soon as you hear the merchant's little jingle.

How to capture a monster

It all happens at the end of the fight, just before taking the few hundred LP that a big monster has left. When your prey is "capturable", it is simply indicated directly on its icon in the top right corner of the screen, by a blue logo. For the rest, it's simple: you or another player set the trap, lure the monster into it, apply two tranquilizer bombs. Please note that except for the two monsters related to the Kamura sisters, it is possible to capture the entire bestiary of MH Rise.

Benefits of capture

Capturing a monster instead of killing it is always a good idea, even when it is not the main objective of your mission. Sparing the monster by putting it to sleep will give you more components in quest rewards. Apart from two or three specific components, which require the animals to be butchered, capture is the preferred option in 95% of the cases. Incidentally, it allows you to shorten the fight: a few seconds less to suffer the attacks of Magnamalo, it's already a good thing!
